Same Lake, New Store

Hey Everyone -- Today we're launching a new holiday-shopping version of our online store, FEEDTHELAKE.COM.  If you're wondering why on earth we call the store FEEDTHELAKE.COM, pop on over and find out.

I'm really excited about the music and books we have there.  Years ago I toured with Rich Mullins, and one of the things I've always remembered about him was his enthusiasm for music and books he loved.  He literally forced me to sit down with G. K. Chesterton's ORTHODOXY*, and he read along over for my shoulder for most of it.  I guess this little store is my attempt to do that with you -- pretty much everything in there is something I'd make you listen to or read if we got to hang out for very long.

So check it out!

(Oh, and if you're into sales and the like, we've got up to 40% off over there right now, so you can feed your soul and get a bargain at the same time!)

12/11/09 - NEW UPDATE-- Orthodoxy and several other great new titles now up at FeedTheLake!

As we say at the store -- Merry Shopping and Happy Christmas!

Street Sweepers and Bookkeepers (Thx to MLK)

Tonight I am surrounded by numbers, papers, files, boxes, and all manner of things I don't care for.  I am doing the books for my parents' restaurant.  Frankly, I've been feeling just a touch sorry for myself, trapped here doing paperwork when I should be MAKING ART.  (You have to imagine that last bit delivered dramatically, possibly with an imitation English accent.)

Fortunately, my pity party has been cut short by Martin Luther King, who can always be relied upon for a little perspective.  Here's what he just told me:

“If it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures, sweep streets like Beethoven composed music, sweep streets like Leontyne Price sings before the Metropolitan Opera. Sweep streets like Shakespeare wrote poetry. Sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will have to pause and say: Here lived a great street sweeper who swept his job well.”- MLK

And so, I will do the books as artfully as I can.  Which, frankly, isn't much.  But it's something.

That's All,
CA

Why I Make Records

We're almost a month into the release of my new project, LOVE WAS HERE FIRST, and I am having the great fun of hearing how people are interacting with the music.  In this hyper-connected world of Facebook, Twitter, Blogs and email, there is much more immediate and direct contact with the folks who listen to my songs, and it's truly a blast to hear their reactions in close to real time.  So thanks to each one of you who has taken the time to share your response ... and to those of you who haven't:  What do you think?  Huh?  Huh?

I'm laughing, but I'm serious ...

Anyway, today I came across a blog I wrote over at Conversantlife over a year ago (September 3, 2008) when I had just begun recording this project.  (Why the project took over a year to make is a long story I've shared elsewhere.)  It's a piece exploring the reasons to even keep recording CDs in a topsy turvy music market.  I was surprised to rediscover it as I don't remember writing it.  But I sure remember feeling it, and I feel it still.  So I thought I'd share the blog here.

CDs and Books and Massive Anxiety Attacks, Oh My

Lest We Forget (plus a free song and book excerpt)

It's almost 1am here in British Columbia and we have officially bid adeiu to another Remembrance Day.  With all due respect to my American cousins, I prefer the name "Remembrance Day" to "Veterans Day", because the event is a rare and holy invitation to a time of intentional recall.

My kids and I saluted in front of the television at 11am this morning and welled up to Reveille and In Flanders Fields.  Bethany (and Mark) coloured 5 or 6 poppy and cross scenes and we taped them up on the pantry cupboards.  At bedtime prayers both of our kids thanked God for the courage of others and noted unprompted that they were reminded of Christ's sacrifice for them.

Time and geography put considerable distance between my own little family and the realities of war.  If there weren't a day set aside--a holiday, even--for remembering, we'd forget for sure ...

In honor of this special remembering day, I'd like to share an excerpt with you from my book WRESTLING WITH ANGELS--a chapter all about remembering so that we don't forget.  And because it's late and I'm feeling sentimental, I'm also going to share a song here called DO WE DARE (from my FEEL FREE disc) that is likewise all about recall.  I hope you can find a moment to check out both, and that you enjoy them -- just scroll down to the bottom of this post to download.

Covenant Report

Hey There -- My pals over at Signpost asked me to report on my recent involvement with The Covenant Awards (Canadian Gospel Music Awards) in Calgary.  It seems only right that I share my thoughts here as well!  Here is my report:

The weekend of October 22nd I had the privilege of participating in the Gospel Music Association of Canada’s Covenant Awards in Calgary, AB.  The awards themselves are preceded by several days of conferences, showcases and concerts; unfortunately I can’t give an eyewitness account of those earlier events as I did not land in Calgary until early Friday morning.  I did hear from several reliable sources that it was a stimulating and inspiring whirlwind of panels, seminars and shows ...

AND WE HAVE A WINNER

A heartfelt thanks to all you splendid nitpickers who have helped us fine-tune the new site.  (We're still fixing some of the things you pointed out, but we're getting there!)  You have proven yourselves to be Sultans of Scrutiny.  Magistrates of Minutiae.  Titans of Typos.  Princes (and Princesses) of Proofing.  Captains of Criticism.  Lords of Language.  I'll stop now.

If you would kindly commence a cyber drum roll, I can tell you who won our "Catch us Messing Up and Win" contest.  Our most faultfinding and therefore most valuable contributor was...

RYAN.

Congrats Ryan.  Please send your mailing address and cd choice (any title currently available at FEEDTHELAKE.COM) to info@carolynarends.com, and we will mail your prize out ASAP.

And though the contest is over, the invitation is not.  Keep telling us how we can continue to improve things around here.  We want you to stay a while!

Sincerely,

The Heiress of Error ... er, Carolyn
