Justine Has Spoken

Hi Everyone,

So here's the thing. When a new recording comes out, an artist has a certain level of anxiety while she waits to hear what the masses think. I'd like to say that I don't read my reviews, that I have an inner compass that tells me if I've hit the mark, that I'm impervious to the opinions of others. But I'd be lying.

Music is, among other things, communication ... it needs a receiver. A one-way conversation is just kind of lonely. So, frankly, what you think of my stuff matters to me very much. It's early, but so far those of you who have had a chance to hear my new project (LOVE WAS HERE FIRST) have been more than kind, and I've found myself happily exhaling. (If you're curious, you can go HERE for a list of early review links.) But, while some artists wait nervously for their Rolling Stone or Paste review, there is one tastemaker I'm always anxious to hear from. This particular reviewer is insightful and incisive, she sets the bar high and isn't afraid to say if I've missed it. This reviewer is Justine Olawsky.

Justine is a long-time supporter of my work, and although I'm writing this blog entry with a smile on my face, I'm quite serious when I say I wait to hear what she thinks of any new project I release. Good news: She has now reviewed my new project at her ADORABLE TRIVIALITIES blog and I think it's fair to say both of her thumbs are up. You can read her review HERE.

Phew!

Keep telling me what you think. It means much.

Peace to you this day,

Carolyn

Catch us messing up.  Embrass us.  Point out our flaws.

We want you to!

This is the soft launch of the new and improved www.carolynarends.com.  What do we mean by "soft launch"?  We're still tinkering and fine-tuning, and we've got lots of ideas for things we'd like to add and develop.  (Although I must say, hasn't our webmaster Rose done a fabulous job?)

Anyway, being the night owls we are, a lot of the work on this site was done in the wee hours -- which means there just might [most certainly] be a tyop or two.  So we're counting on YOU to help us get everything ship shape.  If you find a typo, dead link, or otherwise problematic element of the site, please post it to the comments section below.

THE PERSON WHO CATCHES THE MOST MISTAKES WINS ANY IN-STOCK CD OF THEIR CHOICE FROM OUR ONLINE STORE, FEEDTHELAKE.COM.

So c'mon, really let us have it.  Thanks!

Click here for Steve Bell's song-by-song review of LOVE WAS HERE FIRST.

More info on LWHF is here.

And there's a fun Bell/Arends blast-from-the-past video here ... even if I don't know what I was wearing that night!  (This song, "Who You Are" is from my 2004 project UNDER THE GAZE.)

LWHF - The Very First Reviews

LWHF,Love Was Here First,Carolyn Arends

We've had nifty response from the blogosphere to our blogger review program, and the reviews for my new project LOVE WAS HERE FIRST are coming in.  Here's what folks are saying:

DESPERATE PASTOR

Carolyn Arends's new recording (and her tenth release), Love Was Here First, is unique, original, refreshing, and insightful. The first several times I listened to the uniformly quality tracks, I found myself wondering who she sounds like, who she reminds me of. I finally realized: no one. She has a sound and songwriting style that could be favorably compared to a number of others, but unlike some Christian artists, she seems to be truly making her own music, not imitating someone else's. read more ...

What a freakin' great album!  Who but Carolyn could write penetratingly from the shadows and loss of our society's tragic and wayward individualism, and yet leave the listener with a good hope?  Carolyn is a master of her craft, she keeps getting better and we are the better for it. - Steve Bell, recording artist

Now parenthood has a soundtrack.

Most music-lovers say the albums they treasure the most are the ones that take them on a journey.  This unique and soon-to-be treasured recording goes one step further by becoming a part of the extraordinary journey every new, expectant and veteran parent is already on. These ten songs from the heart of a troubadour are destined to capture the hearts of families everywhere.

Featuring six brand new Arends' originals, two new reinterpretations of the Arends' classics "We've Been Waiting For You" and "Even the Wallflowers," and wonderfully fresh covers of Bob Dylan's "Forever Young" and Carole King's "(You Make Me Feel) Like a Natural Woman."

  • Produced by Carolyn Arends
  • Features the Love Sponge Strings on "Come Anyway", "Be God's" and "We've Been Waiting for You"

OK, I'm man enough to admit it: Carolyn Arends brought tears to my eyes.  I defy even the most hardened cynic to listen to WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU and not be moved in some way. - Jeff Dewsbury, BC Christian News
